Smaller than a sparrow with brown back, finely streaked with black and with chestnut streaking on the flanks and a lead-grey head and throat. It nests in scrub on mountainsides and in winter descends to lower ground. It feeds mainly on insects, grubs and spiders. In Extremadura breeding occurs on the high mountains whilst it can be found almost anywhere in the winter.
