A medium-sized bird of prey which specialises in catching fish. It has particularly coarse scales on its feet to improve its grip of slippery prey. It has dark brown plumage on the upperparts with a dark mask and yellow eyes and is white below. It does not breed in Extremadura, occurring on passage and wintering in extensive wetlands, large rivers and reservoirs.
