A large wader with long dark legs and a fine bill which is orange at the base and black at the tip, found in shallow pools and rice stubble. It does not breed in Extremadura but the Guadiana floodplain rice fields are an important wintering and migratory stopover site for the species. They feed on invertebrates by probing in the mud with their long bills.
