The commonest of all the wild ducks that occur in Extremadura and indeed will sometimes become tame and mix with domestic ducks in parks and gardens. The male has a dark iridescent bottle-green head, chocolate brown breast and brownish-grey back. It can be found on almost any water body, as well as irrigated cereals. In winter, the population increases with migrants from colder areas in the north.
