The same size as Mallard and Gadwall, the male is perhaps the most elegant of all ducks with its bluish bill and long tail. The plumage shows a variety of grey tones, white and black, as well as creamy patches. Its speculum is metallic violet. It feeds on aquatic vegetation and small invertebrates. It is a winter visitor.
