A small, pigeon-sized heron, with long yellow legs and a long, fine, orange-yellow bill. It occurs beside lakes and slow-flowing rivers with abundant fringing vegetation, where it can occur unnoticed, only being detected when in flight from one side to another or by its call. It feeds on small aquatic animals. In Extremadura it is common spring and summer, with few records during the winter.
