A large member of the heron family, with plumage which makes it very well camouflaged in marshy vegetation beside pools and lakes. Its scientific name is derived from its booming call which can sound a bit like the bellowing of a bull and can be heard from a great distance. It is very scarce in Extremadura, breeding has not yet been confirmed, but is likely to be before long. It feeds on fish and amphibians.
