Larger than a partridge, with intense dark blue plumage with brilliant iridescence and legs, bill and shield bright red. They are associated with large water bodies with abundant marshy vegetation on the banks and water lilies. They feed mainly on aquatic vegetation but can also take small animals. They only breed at Arrocampo, but are also seen in the Guadiana floodplain.
