Slightly smaller than a sparrow and rather slimmer. Despite is colourful plumage it can blend well into the foliage. It has a black head, with large white cheek patches. The underparts are bright yellow with a black stripe running down the centre of the belly, with bluish green upperparts. The short, fine bill is adapted for feeding on insects, although it will also feed on fruit and seeds. It has a large repertoire, able to sing up to 50 different songs. It is present throughout the year.
