A robust corvid with entirely black plumage showing metallic iridescence, and a strong, slightly curved bill. It is distinguished from the raven by its smaller size and its square-ended tail, which resembles an open fan.

In Extremadura, it is a common resident species inhabiting diverse landscapes, ranging from dehesas (wood pastures) and the edges of riverside woodlands to agricultural areas and plains.
