Similar in size to a sparrow, it has reddish brown upperparts, mottled with black, a reddish buff belly and grey head and breast, with three black stripes across the head. It is found on rocky, scrubby hillsides with scattered trees. It feeds on seeds, shoots and, to a lesser extent, insects. In Extremadura it is present throughout the year and is common in suitable habitat.
