A medium-sized gull of inland waters, with pale grey wings, white body and red legs. In the summer, the head is chocolate brown whilst in winter it is white with just a few dark markings on the side of the head and over the eye. It prefers large reservoirs, slow-flowing rivers, arable land and rice fields. It is common in the winter and there are also a few breeding records in Extremadura.
