A small passerine bird notable for its uniform chocolate-brown crown and a distinctive black patch on its white cheek. Unlike the House Sparrow, males and females are identical. It is the smallest of the sparrows found in the Iberian Peninsula.
In Extremadura, its primary habitats are open dehesas, riverside woodlands, and agricultural fringes with scattered trees, generally avoiding urban centres. It is a resident species that remains in the region year-round. Although common, its populations face the challenges of intensive farming.
