A thrush-sized bird, the males have bright yellow plumage with black wings, whilst the females are duller with a more greenish tone. Its fluty song is very beautiful and betrays their presence in the trees. It is closely associated with deciduous woodland such as oak, poplar and ash. They feed on small grasshoppers, crickets and caterpillars, switching to fruit such as figs and blackberries by late summer. In Extremadura they are summer visitors.
