A pigeon-sized bird, with long slender wings, with white plumage and crown, bill and legs black. It frequents reservoirs where there are islands without vegetation, such as Sierra Brava, Los Canchales and Orellana. It will eat mice, lizards, small birds or insects, sometimes far from water, in cereal crops. It occurs in Extremadura from mid-April until mid-September.
