Smaller than a Green Woodpecker with black upperparts with large white patches on the wings. The breast is pink with the belly and a nape patch (males only) intense red. It occurs in riverine forest, pinewoods, dense dehesa and other wooded areas. It eats insects living in trees and sometimes will predate the nests of small birds. Present throughout the year.
