Larger than a thrush with dull-green back, greenish-grey underparts and striking red crown. It occurs in dense woodland, cork oak groves and oak woods, including dehesas. The nest is excavated by the in the trunk of a tree. It eats insect larvae, extracted by its long tongue from holes made by the bill. Present throughout the year.
