A robust finch whose most distinctive feature is its crossed bill, a specialised tool for extracting seeds from pinecones. Males display reddish or orange tones, whereas females are greenish or olive-coloured.

In Extremadura, it is a resident species, albeit with a markedly nomadic character. It inhabits pine forests.
