A small water bird which feeds on aquatic invertebrates by diving under water, where it can remain submerged for several minutes. It has two plumages: a winter plumage and brighter breeding plumage. Breeding takes place in pools and other water bodies, wherever there is floating vegetation. They also occur on reservoirs in the winter.
