Stork Week in Malpartida de Cáceres

From 13 to 19 April, this town — the only municipality in Spain that is part of the European Stork Villages Network — organises a programme of activities centred around this much-loved species in Extremadura. Events include guided walks, children’s workshops, exhibitions and a photography competition.

Malpartida de Cáceres is known for the Vostell Museum, one of the most original in Spain; for the Los Barruecos Natural Monument, with its colossal granite rocks, where the series Game of Thrones was filmed; and for patatera, a traditional Extremaduran sausage. It is also renowned for its special connection with storks.

In 1990, the town launched Stork Week, an initiative that this year celebrates its 35th edition from 13 to 19 April. During these days, Malpartida de Cáceres pays tribute to these birds with a programme of activities that includes hiking routes, environmental education workshops and exhibitions — among them the photography competition organised as part of Stork Week — as well as a gazpacho-making and tasting contest (in Extremadura, the clattering sound made by storks is referred to as hacer el gazpacho or machacar el ajo).
